New sneakers. WOOT!! (running shoes)

Well I have been doing a lot of reading about running and how shoes effect it.  Last night I went to Fleet Feet over on Monroe Ave.  They went over a bunch of different things about how my feet are and how they land and pronate.  I never knew that much went into just running down the road.  Anyway I ended up getting some new running shoes, arch supports( I have high arches) and some new running socks.  The socks are awesome.  I think I might wear them around normally.  I got a pair of Saucony Progrid Guide 4 shoes.  They have been great so far.  I went for a little run today and felt good.  Getting used to the arch support was a little tougher.  It feels like a ball under my arch, but they said it could take a couple weeks to get used to.  Running didn't go much better today, but the GPS on my phone worked so that is a positive.  I am just going to keep taking it easy for a couple weeks to let my shins get used to it.  They were my bane once again today and I had to stop and walk about a third of the way through my 20 minutes.  Oh well.

Frustrating...

Well day 2 of running.  I tried to take it easy on my shins today.  I ran for about 4 minutes then walked.  My shins were good for about 2 rounds of that and then the pain kicked.  I only got about 1.6 miles in since my shins were again killing me.  I know there will be a payoff to this in the end.  It is just frustrating that its not my leg muscles or lungs that are giving out, but these shin splints.  All the time I played basketball last year I never had them.  I played basketball a couple times this month and haven't had an issue with my shins.  I guess its just a different type of exercise and I need to get used to being in pain for a while.  Still staying strong.

Official Day 1

Day 1 of officially trying to run.  I have been walking for the last few days to get my legs a little ready.  I read that on some website somewhere.  We all know the interweb knows all...  Anyway.  It felt good to start and then after about a 1/2 mile my shins were on fire.  I took a little break and then tried to run again, but they were done.  I could run no further.  I finished out walking and got about 1.6 miles in.  I would like to tell you for sure how far it was, but the GPS on my phone seems to have gone AWOL.  I will be going to verizon tomorrow to see what they can do.  I hope my shins catch up to the rest of my body or this is going to be painful every run and I am not a big fan of pain.

The beginning...

Well I said I would never start running, just for the sake of running.  I have never liked running.  I did it for sports when I had to and that is about it.  I am going to see how this goes and hoping this blog will keep me motivated to do it harder.  So far I have read up on some websites to start slow, so I am going to be starting slow.  I ordered an arm band for my Thunderbolt, so I can GPS my run and also listen to some music.  If anyone has any advice just let me know.
